Several students asked for a poetry unit in my ELA class so I purchased this anthology with a few other poetry books. We love it!The poems range from ridiculous and silly to raw and identifiable. Some offer goofy fun sprinkled with a touch of reality and others tell a history lesson.I utilized this book and a book about poetry types with my 7th grade students to look at the idea of mistakes, what they are, how they affect us, and how we move on from them. We looked at mistakes we’ve made and mistakes others have made toward us. The meanings of trust and forgiveness played into the conversation heavily. Students independently and privately brainstormed (with prompts) several types of mistakes they’ve experienced and how they define words like forgiveness. Then, they chose 3 to turn into poems (they were given a list poem style choices). The poems were amazing and all inspired by this book.Students displayed their poetry with another project involving a sort of self portrait with the commentary that “mistakes are okay, we aren’t our mistakes, and we learn from mistakes”.Even if you aren’t a teacher, this is a worthwhile purchase. It’s very relatable and an easy, enjoyable read.
